The Science Behind Allergies and Why We Get Allergies

Have you ever wondered how something works or how something was made? In the monthly Science Behind series, we partner with a guest presenter to explore a large variety of interesting topics. The Science Behind series offers opportunities for adults to apply new knowledge and skills to everyday life, while having fun!

** This Science Behind event took place in June, 2014 **

The Science Behind Allergies and why we get allergies

Many of us endure allergies over the course of our lives, but why?  Join Walking Mountains Science Center for the Science Behind Allergies on Monday, June 30, 2014 at 6:30PM.  Dr. William Silvers, Clinical Professor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and consultant clinician at Vail Valley Medical Center, will teach us why our bodies can react to certain substances in such dreadful ways.  We will also learn about plants that commonly cause seasonal allergies and how to live with them.  Dr. Silvers will discuss the more than 100-year history of immunotherapy, and the choices we have to control our allergies today.  Empower yourself to control allergies and continue living actively by understanding the science behind allergies!

Our guest presenter, Dr. Silvers, has been listed in 5280 “Denver’s Top Doctors” for multiple years.  He is an allergist in private practice at Allergy Asthma Colorado, P.C. at Greenwood Medical Center in Englewood, CO, with consultation clinics at Sky Ridge Medical Center, Summit County, and Vail. His scientific interests include integrative approaches to allergies and asthma, exercise induced asthma and anaphylaxis, and "The Skier's Nose” - cold induced rhinitis which he originally described with novel therapeutic modalities. Dr. William Silvers

In addition to explaining the causes of allergies, Dr. Silvers will teach us about the community pollen study that is being conducted on the Walking Mountains campus, which will help to inform local allergy treatments.

The Science Behind series of classes highlights useful and fun skills that have underlying scientific principles. Each class provides a hands-on, interactive component with instruction from a local subject matter expert and a Walking Mountains educator. Classes are held once a month at Walking Mountains Science Center in Avon.
