Decomposer Detectives

Campus-July 15-July 19 $295

Follow trash and wastewater through landfills and treatment plants. Experiment with mold, crawly critters, and compost. How do we clean up our messes? We'll dig deep to uncover the truth about natural and human made processes for breakin' it down!

 Creep and Crawl

Explore the fascinating world of slimy salamanders, scaly snakes, and bothersome bugs. Get down and dirty to learn why these often misunderstood critters are so important to the natural world!

 Captain "Plant-It"

Campus- August 5- August 9 $295 - this session is full but there is one scholarship spot available.

Young aspiring botanists team up together to discover some of the super power secrets that help plants and pollinators survive and thrive. While hiking, exploring, and crafting learn how to harness these super powers to enjoy and protect our plant allies.

Dino Detectives

Dig into the geologic history of the Rocky Mountains! Young paleontologists discover the creatures that roamed ancient Colorado, search for fossils, and hunt for bones.

5 Senses Alive

Butterflies taste with their feet, while bats find food with their ears. With your five senses as your guide, you'll explore animal survival and the natural world through sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and touch.

Get your feet wet in the creeks and rivers of the Eagle Valley and discover the creatures that swim, crawl, and play there. This adventure is a great introduction to our watershed community.

Forces of Nature

Embrace the elements and explore the forces of nature- earth, wind, fire, and water! Unravel the mysteries of the changing seasons, extreme weather, and earth-shaping events! Consider how humans represent the fifth element here on Planet Earth.

Every living thing has a special relationship with the place it calls home. Here in the Rocky Mountains a diversity of habitats create a specialized living environment for plants and animals. Discover where your favorite wild things thrive, survive, and come alive!

Rock Hounds

Delve into the past and discover our rich mining history. Learn about the rocks, minerals, and gems that make Colorado so colorful, visit a real mine, and maybe even strike it rich panning for gold!

Wandering the Watershed

Become a geography expert and explore the relationship between land and water. Hike through magical mountain life zones, wander the Eagle River watershed, and find hidden treasure with map and compass! Take a look at what it really means to live downstream and participate in a local river clean-up project.

Adventure Seekers

Come explore the many adventures our Valley has to offer! Bag a peak, raft a river, scale a wall. Challenge yourself, work as a team and create exciting memories this summer.

Seventh and Eighth Grade Programs

The Way Things Work

Campus July 15- July 19 $295- this session is FULL!  Call to check the waitlist.

Design, create, discover! Get hands-on with basic mechanics as you engage in building projects and create engineering marvels. Over the course of the week students will gain an understanding of how the laws of physics effect our natural world and how they can harness their creative power to engineer their own solutions.

Walking Mountains Science Center™ is a 501(3c) nonprofit that provides place-based education in natural and environmental science through science programs for Eagle County schools, summer science day camps and overnight camps, adult and family excursions that take place across Vail, Colorado and Eagle County, Colorado. Graduate fellows can apply to be environmental educators and intern naturalists. Our educational programs enhance scientific literacy, build environmental awareness, and inspire stewardship in children, adults, residents and visitors to the Vail area and Rocky Mountains. The science center recently achieved LEED Platinum Certification for the Buck Creek Campus from the U.S. Green Building Council.
