J&K, Inc — Civil Engineer
J&K, Inc. accepted the challenge of creating a site that minimizes disruption to the eco-system and promotes environmental learning opportunities. The existing wetlands and Buck Creek drainage system became the dominant design element that defined the site and led to the ethic of minimizing the development’s footprint. We bridged over the wetlands with a causeway entrance road and elevated boardwalks for pedestrian movement. We utilized the wetlands for storm water discharge and water quality control. We developed grading and drainage elements that minimized the impact of roads, parking, pedestrian access and buildings. We carefully selected paving surface materials that encourage storm water and snowmelt infiltration to replenish the wetlands. J&K’s civil engineering was integrally linked and coordinated with the design team and specifically with landscaping and the building architecture to create a cohesive and thoughtful design.
Mithun – Design Architect
Mithun, a national leader in sustainable design and environmental education facility planning, has worked collaboratively with Zehren and Associates and other key consultants from the earliest conception of the project through construction documents to final stages of completion. As design lead on the project, Mithun worked closely with Gore Range staff and stakeholders to clarify the vision for this new campus and create a design that reflects the values and mission of this organization as well as the context and larger sense of place for this site and region. Mithun and Zehren have forged a seamless integrated project process that has resulted in a vibrant project vision that will provide a dynamic and sustainable new home for the Gore Range Natural Science School.

RA Nelson
Established in 1976 by R.A. “Chupa” Nelson, R.A. Nelson & Associates, Inc. has expanded from an enterprising, two-man partnership to a general contracting firm with four owners and over 60 full-time employees based out of two Colorado offices. We offer a comprehensive range of services, from pre-construction through property management and maintenance. Building mountain resort communities for over three decades has produced a variety of award-winning projects throughout Colorado, including sustainable developments, mixed-use complexes, multi-family housing, diverse community structures, complex renovations, and luxury custom homes.
Sherry Dorward Landscape Architecture — Landscape Architect
Based in Vail for over twenty years, Sherry Dorward Landscape Architecture is a design studio with particular expertise in the ecology and aesthetics of mountain environments. In close collaboration with the project design team, the landscape architects worked to create a campus plan in which the natural landscape is the dominant feature, consistent with the school's mission to strengthen the connections between people and place and to maximize educational opportunities for students and visitors alike. On the school's 4.6-acre site, the firm's role focused on the preservation of wetlands, riparian areas and natural hydrologic features; water conservation; and the restoration of the site with native species.
Slifer Designs — Interior Designer
Slifer Designs is a national authority in the field of resort interior design and interior architecture. Specializing in award winning residential and hospitality projects, Slifer Designs is based in Vail, Colorado and has designed projects all over North America. The in-house Green Team is committed to healthy and sustainable design, and the beautiful furniture showroom (in Edwards) is open to the public seven days a week.
Zehren and Associates — Project Architect
Zehren and Associates is an internationally recognized leader in design and master planning for sensitive resort environments with a strong regional context. As the Project Architect for the new campus, Zehren forged a strong alliance with Mithun, Sherry Dorward and other team members to provide integrated design and a cohesive approach to the design and documentation that remained true to the vision set forth by the Board of Directors, staff and stakeholders. Zehren served as the LEED coordinator for the campus and worked to establish a design environment where the consultants were encouraged to push the envelope far beyond the minimum sustainable performance standards, while proposing solutions that remained economical, durable and fully integrated with the overall design. The buildings and grounds were designed to provide layers of education; meaning that some of the sustainable features are readily apparent and others are only revealed with further study.
