In May 2016 Colorado made history by becoming the first state in the nation to establish an official holiday recognizing the value of its public lands. Vail’s own Senator Kerry Donovan and Governor Hickenlooper recognized the importance of public lands for Colorado’s identity, culture, and economy. 90% of the people living in Colorado use their public lands, and Colorado has four national parks, eight national monuments and 41 state parks to explore. It’s no surprise that public lands are integral to the Colorado way of life!
Saturday, May 20, 2017 is Colorado Public Lands Day, and Walking Mountains is here to help you celebrate!
Booth at Ride Avon First Event
Stop by Nottingham Park in Avon for the Town’s celebration of the first annual Colorado Public Lands Day. From 1:30 pm to 6:30 pm come by and visit our booth for games, activities and giveaways! The event will also feature music, food, vendors, a scavenger hunt, kids’ mountain bike skills course, and more! All ages welcome, free!
Avon Nature Walks
See the difference 500 feet in elevation can make! Join Walking Mountains certified guides for educational hikes in two different Avon ecosystems. Hikers should bring water, sunscreen, and sturdy close-toed shoes:
Walking Mountains Science Center, Tang Campus, Avon
Nestled up to Buck Creek in the valley floor, the Walking Mountains Science Center Avon campus has beautiful trails winding through lush riparian ecosystems. Gentle hikes will be departing from this location every hour on the hour between 11:00 am-2:00 pm. Click here for directions.
Beaver Creek Pt. Trailhead, Wildridge
A ten-minute drive from the Avon Town center rewards adventurers with impressive views of the valley, from Edwards to the Back Bowls of Vail. Just a little jump in elevation creates a vastly different environment. The trails up in the hills are great for mountain biking and running among sage scrub. Deer and other wildlife are plentiful in this area! Guided hikes will depart from this location every hour on the hour between 11:00 am-2:00 pm. Click here for directions.
