The Science Behind Homemade Wine

Have you ever wondered how something works or how something was made? In the monthly Science Behind series, we partner with a guest presenter to explore a large variety of interesting topics. The Science Behind series offers opportunities for adults to apply new knowledge and skills to everyday life, while having fun!

** This Science Behind event took place in January, 2014 **

The Science Behind Homemade Wine and the Basics of Winemaking

Join Walking Mountains Science Center on Wednesday, January 22 at 6:30 PM to explore the Science Behind Homemade Wine!  Beth Reed from the Wine or Wort store in Gypsum is our guest presenter, and will share her passion for and expertise in homemade wine.  This hands-on program will help you understand the basics of winemaking, and after sampling some chocolate raspberry port, may even inspire you to start a new hobby!

We will also explore answers to questions such as: Science Behind Homemade Wine

  • How is wine made on a small scale, and how does it differ from large-scale winery production?
  • What are sulfites, and why are they added to wine?
  • How can we experiment with different flavors and non-traditional wines?

Most importantly, we will roll up our sleeves and make a batch of wine!

Note: Participants will not be able to take home their wine on January 22 due to the timescale of winemaking; Wine or Wort will invite the group to bottle this batch to take home at their Gypsum store on a future date.

The Science Behind series of classes highlights useful and fun skills that have underlying scientific principles. Each class provides a hands-on, interactive component with instruction from a local subject matter expert and a Walking Mountains educator. Classes are held once a month at Walking Mountains Science Center in Avon.
