The Science Behind Perfume

Have you ever wondered how something works or how something was made? In the monthly Science Behind series, we partner with a guest presenter to explore a large variety of interesting topics. The Science Behind series offers opportunities for adults to apply new knowledge and skills to everyday life, while having fun!

** This Science Behind event took place in May, 2014 **

The Science Behind Perfume and Fragrance

Did you know that most normal people can distinguish about 4,000 smells, but a good perfumer has up to 10,000 elements in their smell memory? In France, le nez or “the nose” is the most important tool in the craft.

Discover how to make perfumes the way your grandparents did! Using natural materials like sweet almond oil, distilled water, alcohol, and various essential oils, learn the art of creating your own fabulous smelling, natural concoctions. Participants will delve into the history of perfumery and the building blocks of mixing and creating scents using essential oils and balanced notes. This class will also explore the science of smell and how your nose and brain work together to interpret and shape your olfactory experience.

Upcoming Science Behind Schedule

In this hands-on and interactive program, students will leave with two unique perfumes that will only get better with age. They will be able to follow a recipe or create a free style combination all their own! The class will be taught by Walking Mountains Science Center staff members and aroma enthusiasts, Lara Carlson and Kristen Belschner.

The Science Behind series of classes highlights useful and fun skills that have underlying scientific principles. Each class provides a hands-on, interactive component with instruction from a local subject matter expert and a Walking Mountains educator. Classes are held once a month at Walking Mountains Science Center in Avon. Spaces are limited, cost is $15/person for supplies, please call to reserve your spot today (970) 827-9725!
