The Science Behind Responsible RecyclingHave you ever wondered how something works or how something was made? In the monthly Science Behind series, we partner with a guest presenter to explore a large variety of interesting topics. The Science Behind series offers opportunities for adults to apply new knowledge and skills to everyday life, while having fun!

** This Science Behind event took place in April, 2018 **

The Science Behind Responsible Recycling

Not all heroes wear capes.  The heroes I’m talking about don’t don masks or have alter egos.  These heroes wear rubber gloves and sort through trash, they read labels, reuse products, and try not to purchase one-time-use plastics.  The heroes I’m talking about are responsible recyclers and they’re all around us in the community, and YOU can be one too!

Join the Sustainability Team from Walking Mountains Science Center on Thursday, April 19th at 6:30 pm to discuss the science behind recycling, from plastic's origins to the different pathways it takes after purchase.  Learn the makeup and breakdown of these products and discover how you can be a conscious consumer, a responsible recycler, and a zero waste hero.  Bring an old t-shirt along with you to turn it into a new and useful reusable product!  Don’t miss your chance to enter a raffle to win some excellent Patagonia products and ask local brand representatives about their sustainability initiatives.

Upcoming Science Behind Schedule

Have you ever wondered how plastic is made? Before being sold, used, and disposed of, plastic's life cycle starts at its extraction from crude oil to become the product we see on our shelves. With the fate of our products ending up in either our landfill, local waterways, or recycling facility, its life span often times leaves an impact.  Understanding the life cycles of oil-based products and how they impact the environment is the first important step in changing our one-time-use economy and working toward a more sustainable future.

At Walking Mountains Science Center we are committed to the sustainability of the Eagle Valley and surrounding mountain environment. We value the ecological, economic, and socio-cultural health of our community and our valley. Therefore we strive to engage our participants, visitors, and employees in learning opportunities that enrich our community’s sense of well-being. Walking Mountains’ commitment to sustainability is guided by a sustainability policy and action plan that is integrated through our entire organization. By participating in our programs you are choosing to support certified sustainable activities.
