Walking Mountains Science Center
Just minutes from I-70 but a world away, the Walking Mountains Science Center Avon Tang Campus is a 10-acre natural learning hub in the heart of the Eagle Valley. With a stream, pond, wetlands, aspen forest, and National Forest access, this campus—donated by Oscar Tang in 2007—offers a unique space for discovery and connection with nature.

Precourt Mountain Discovery Center (Visitor Center)
Nestled among aspen and pine forests, the Precourt Mountain Discovery Center is the centerpiece of the Avon Tang Campus. Open to the public, the Visitor Center features interactive exhibits, group learning areas, a gift shop, and sustainable design elements that are part of the educational experience. Visitors are invited to join a free guided nature walk and explore their curiosity with us.
Borgen Precourt Center for Sustainability
Completed in 2019, the Borgen Precourt Center for Sustainability is a LEED-certified building that houses Walking Mountains’ sustainability programs, offices, and classrooms. It includes the Mayer and Shannon Family Classrooms, supporting environmental education, hands-on workshops, and community events across the campus. Sustainability at its finest.
Frechette Field Studies Base Camp
The Frechette Field Studies Base Camp supports aspiring scientists and community learners alike. It serves as a launch point for field studies, youth science camps, and community programs like lectures and The Science Behind series, providing a vital hub for hands-on environmental research, data collection, and place-based education in the Eagle Valley.
George Meadow
Learning Studio
Set beside a pond and wetland along Buck Creek, the George Meadow Learning Studio offers an indoor space that complements outdoor learning. It’s home to early childhood programs such as EarthKeepers and Nature Tykes, providing a unique setting for discovery and exploration. Large windows and natural materials help connect children to the environment even while indoors.

Frechette Family Educator Community
Walking Mountains’ Pete and Pat Frechette Educator Community housing provides essential, affordable accommodations that enable educators, interns, and lead naturalists to live and work in Eagle County, fostering a supportive community while offering private rooms and bathrooms.

- Take the I-70 Avon exit 167 to Nottingham Road & head west
- Turn right onto Buck Creek Road
- Take an immediate right onto Walking Mountains Lane and then turn left to go up the hill.
- Follow signage to park at the Mountain Discovery Center!
