Mitchell Smith

Foley Graduate Fellow

Mitchell grew up in the great state of Ohio, moving to Dallas Texas when he was 15 years old. It was in high school that he developed a love for nature and everything outdoors. Mitchell collected snails and slugs from around the neighborhood, always talking about how fascinating they were, which quickly earned him the nickname “slugmaster” among all of his friends! He ended up going back to Ohio for undergrad, attending Ohio University where Mitchell got a bachelor’s degree in wildlife and conservation biology. After graduating he worked in Oregon with the forest service and in Jackson Wyoming for the Teton Science School before coming to Walking Mountains.

Mitchell has two lovely and supportive parents, one talented younger brother, a wonderful doggo named Zoe, and a pet snail named Shelldon. Shelldon has probably traveled more than any other snail, joining Mitchell on numerous adventures to national parks around the country! In his free time, Mitchell enjoys playing soccer, board games, and hiking!!
