Discover the Natural Side of Vail Mountain
Explore an array of natural history exhibits about local wildlife such as ravens, weasels, lynx, and black bears. Nature Hikes and Snowshoe Tours are also offered from the Nature Discovery Center.
The Nature Discovery Center located in a yurt and is accessed via the Eagle Bahn gondola out of Lionshead in Vail, adjacent to the Eagle’s Nest building. All ages welcome, free admission.
Summer Hours: The Discovery Center has been closed for the season. Visit us again for our 14/15 winter programs.
Programs are offered in partnership between Walking Mountains Science Center, Vail Resorts, and USDA Forest Service.

Walking Mountains Science Center Naturalists will help you explore an array of natural history exhibits and artifacts related to Vail Mountain life and ecology. The mountain top nature center is open during the summer seasons and is accessible via the Eagle Bahn gondola out of Lionshead in Vail. All ages, FREE.
Nature Hikes – Daily 11am-noon and 2pm-3pm
Join a Walking Mountains Naturalist for an educational hike through the forest atop of Vail Mountain. Learn about summer ecology and animal adaptations as you gaze at majestic mountain views. Please come prepared to spend an hour outside in the dry summer environment with appropriate clothing, hiking boots and water. Most ages and abilities, FREE.
Evening Hikes – Thursdays, Fridays & Saturdays 7p-8p
Enjoy an evening hike through the forest atop of Vail Mountain as the sun starts to set and the wildlife becomes more active. Learn about the habits of crepuscular and nocturnal animals that make the mountains their home. Take in the beautiful mountain views of the Gore and Sawatch Ranges at dusk. Most ages and abilities, FREE.
