Join Vail and Walking Mountains Science Center on the journey to become a globally recognized and certified sustainable destination.
As the premier international mountain resort community, Vail is partnering with Walking Mountains Science Center and the global nonprofit Sustainable Travel International to become a certified sustainable destination under criteria set forth by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council.
In order to become a certified sustainable destination Vail must meet and maintain progress on over 40 sustainability criteria including: environmental stewardship, climate change adaptation, greenhouse gas reductions, cultural heritage protection, low impact transportation, waste reduction, public health and safety, workforce housing, sustainability education, and more.
In conjunction with this initiative, a new “Mountain IDEAL” sustainability standard for Mountain Resort Communities has been developed to address challenges unique to mountain living and winter environments such as water and energy use related to snow making and snow melting systems.
Once Vail accomplishes all of the steps to become certified the “Mountain IDEAL” will be available to other mountain resort communities around the world who wish to elevate their sustainability performance.
